Highways 18, 14 Bridge Replacements Could Finish Next Month

A pair of Charles City-area bridge replacement projects are nearing their finish lines, according to Pete Hjelmstad, Field Services Coordinator with the Mason City District Office of the Iowa DOT.
Hjelmstad says construction of the new bridge over the Mississippi River from Lansing to Wisconsin continues with the driving of casings for the second pier of the new bridge. That has also meant intermittent two-hour closures to vehicle traffic on the current Lansing bridge over the past week.
Hjelmstad adds they will evaluate the progress at the end of this week to determine whether they’ll need to continue with the intermittent closures.
Meanwhile, Hjelmstad says crews continue to play catchup on the bridge replacement on Highway 122 on the west edge of Mason City, a project that was slowed by flooding and high waters earlier this summer.
Hjelmstad says replacement of the Highway 3 bridge over the Cedar River in Waverly is in the early stages with detours already in place. Work will continue until the Fall of 2025, including work this winter as the weather allows.
