Schools, Legislature Cracking Down on Student Absenteeism
School districts are implementing stricter attendance policies in an effort to reduce unexcused absences by students.
New Hampton High School Principal Matt Monson says the new guidelines, passed by the legislature earlier this year, will monitor absences much more closely and not just by the school district.
While unexcused absences are the biggest concern, Monson says that’s not the only part of the equation.
Monson adds that the school district has remedies in place to help parents help their students miss as little school time as possible, giving the student their best chance for success in the classroom.
Like all other school districts across the region, New Hampton will begin the new school year this Friday (08.23).
In advance of opening day, Monson says there will be a Back to School Open House Wednesday (08.21) from 2 to 6 pm at New Hampton Elementary School. The Middle School Open House is from 4 to 6 pm Wednesday, with orientation for fifth grade students at 5 pm.
