Clear Lake man sentenced to four years for federal firearm possession charge

SIOUX CITY — It’s over four years in prison for a Clear Lake man who pleaded guilty to a federal firearm possession-related charge.
The US Attorney for the Northern District of Iowa’s office says 37-year-old Michael Mikkelson admitted that on September 15th of last year, he was riding his bicycle in Clear Lake, when an officer who was aware of Mikkelson having an outstanding arrest warrant spotted him. The officer tried to arrest him, but Mikkelson fled on foot and was not apprehended. Mikkelson later turned himself in to authorities.
Three weeks later, a resident found a handgun next to a garage where the officer lost sight of Mikkelson during the foot chase, with Mikkelson later admitting that the gun was his.
Mikkelson pleaded guilty in April to one count of possession of a firearm by a felon and person convicted of domestic violence. He was sentenced earlier today by US District Court Chief Judge Leonard Strand to 51 months in prison to be followed by a three-year term of supervised release. There is no parole in the federal prison system.
