Britt man found guilty of attempted murder, willful injury

GARNER — A Hancock County jury late last week found a Britt man guilty of attempted murder and willful injury resulting in serious injury.

36-year-old Alexander Padilla was accused of getting into a conflict with a male in the 1100 block of 270th Street in rural Britt on June 19th. A criminal complaint filed by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office stated that Padilla admitted to having engaged in a fight with the victim at the victim’s residence, and during the fight retrieving a firearm from his vehicle and shooting the victim.

The victim had to be flown to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment. The victim told law enforcement two days later that he had gotten into a physical fight with Padilla and told him to leave the property, with Padilla later shooting him.

The jury found Padilla guilty of the two charges after three days of testimony.

Attempted murder is a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, while willful injury causing serious injury is a Class C felony punishable by 10 years. No sentencing date was immediately set.
