3% of corn, 5% of soybeans harvested in north-central Iowa
DES MOINES — Dry weather this past week meant harvest continues to take place across the state and here locally. According to the newly-released USDA weekly crop report, 3% of the corn and 5% of the soybeans have been harvested in the north-central crop reporting district.
USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service Iowa Field Office ag statistician Cody Mortell says the progress of corn statewide continues to be behind last year but close to average. “Corn in the dent stage or beyond reached 93% this week. Corn mature reached 61%, five days behind last year but two days ahead of the average. Corn harvested for grain reached 5%, five days behind last year but equal to the average. Corn condition rated 77% good to excellent.” Here in the north-central district, 91% of corn had reached the dent stage while 57% was mature.
Mortell says soybean progress is ahead of average. “Soybeans coloring or beyond reached 88%, three days behind last year but two days ahead of the five-year average. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 59%, also three days behind last year and two days ahead of the average. Soybeans harvested reached 9% this week, equal to last year but one day ahead of the average. Soybean condition was 78% good to excellent.” Here in north-central Iowa, 93% of soybeans reached the coloring stage while 63% had dropped leaves.
