Bicyclists, motorist asked to be aware as bike traffic continues to be strong in Mason City

MASON CITY — Despite the seasons moving from summer to fall, bike traffic continues to be very active in Mason City.
Mayor Bill Schickel says they want to remind people about safety and respect with more people experiencing the bike trail routes in the community. “We are focusing on bike safety right now because of the increase in bike traffic in Mason City. Just a couple of things to be aware of — no motorcycles, no motorized vehicles are permitted on the trails. We’re also really encouraging respect for the natural habitat, respect for nearby communities. Many of these trails go through just absolutely beautiful natural areas in Mason City. We want to be respectful of that. We want to be respectful of adjacent neighbors.”
Schickel says the trails are monitored. “They are patrolled, the same as our parks, by our Mason City Police Department, and they are open the same hours as our Mason City parks, 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. With the design of all these trails, protection and enhancement of the natural environment, along with the wildlife in that area, has been a priority.”
Schickel says bicyclists and motorists need to be wary of the rules and regulations of the bike lanes on city streets. “Absolutely, and that works both ways. The bicyclists have to be aware of other bicyclists and pedestrians of the rules of the road that you are required as a bicyclist to comply with, and if you are driving around out there, rushing on your way to work, keep your eyes open and be aware that there is other traffic including bicycle traffic out there.”
