Another good week for harvest in north-central Iowa fields
DES MOINES — Another week of hot and dry conditions has meant more of the harvest has been completed in Iowa fields, according to the new Iowa crop report from the US Department of Agriculture.
National Agricultural Statistics Service Iowa Field Office ag statistician Melissa Couch says there were six-and-a-half days suitable for fieldwork statewide last week, with harvesting both of corn and soybeans. She says corn harvested is slightly behind last year’s pace but equal to the five-year average.
“Corn in the dent stage or beyond reached 97% this week. Corn mature reached 75%, one week behind last year but two days ahead of normal. Corn harvested for grain reached 11%, three days behind last year but equal to the five-year average. Corn condition remained at 77% good to excellent.” Here in the north-central crop reporting district, 98% of corn had dented, 76% was mature, and eight percent had been harvested.
Couch says soybean progress for the most part is ahead of last year and the average.
“Soybeans coloring or beyond reached 95%. Soybeans dropping leaves reached 80%, two days behind last year but three days ahead of average. Soybeans harvested reached 27% this week, three days ahead of both last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition rated 77% good to excellent.” Here in north-central Iowa, 99% of soybeans were colored or beyond, 92% of soybeans had dropped leaves, while 26% of the soybeans had been harvested.
