Cross Country Roundup — Newman runs at Jesup; new cross country rankings released

JESUP — The Newman boys finished in sixth place at the Jesup Cross Country Invitational on Tuesday at the Jesup Golf and Country Club. The Knights had 234 points, with Oelwein winning the boys title with 66 points. Dan Spooner had Newman’s best finish, placing 32nd in a time of 17:39.
== The Newman girls finished 11th at Jesup. The Knights had 301 points, with Center Point-Urbana winning with 85 points. Avery Kelly had the best Newman time, finishing 20th in 20:41. Teammate Tess Weiner finished 22nd in 20:57.

DES MOINES — New team cross country rankings were released on Tuesday by the Iowa Association of Track Coaches. Looking at those area teams ranked locally:
== The Lake Mills boys are still ranked 1st in Class 1A, while Newman is 18th in the 1A boys rankings
== Central Springs is ranked 18th in the Class 1A girls rankings, while Earlham is the top team
== Class 2A boys — Denver is the top-ranked team, Forest City is 8th
== Class 2A girls — Van Meter is top-ranked, Forest City is 4th, Osage is 15th
== Class 3A — Gilbert is the top-ranked boys team, while Pella is the top-ranked 3A girls team. Clear Lake dropped out of the 3A girls rankings
== Class 4A girls — Pleasant Valley is the top-ranked team, Mason City is ranked 19th
== Class 4A boys — West Des Moines Dowling is the top-ranked team
