Mason City man sentenced to more than eight years on federal drug, firearm charges

SIOUX CITY — It’s more than eight years in federal prison for a Mason City man who pleaded guilty to federal drug and firearms charges.

24-year-old Tirrell Hopkins Junior was taken into custody by Mason City police after they were called to Lorados at 18 South Federal shortly before midnight on the night of November 18th last year for the report of an armed male involved in a disturbance.

When officers arrived, Hopkins fled on foot from the rear patio. When an officer caught the Hopkins and attempted to take him into custody, a firearm that Hopkins was carrying discharged a round near the feet of both the officer and Hopkins, but neither were injured.

Hopkins also admitted that he was in possession of methamphetamine and intended to distribute some or all of it to another person.

US District Court Chief Judge Leonard Strand last week sentenced Hopkins to 98 months in prison to be followed by a six-year term of supervised release.
