Susan Rae Floy, 91, Thornton

Thornton- Susan Rae Floy, 91, passed away on Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at the Rockwell
Community Nursing Home in Rockwell, IA. A private service will be held at a later date for
family and friends.

Born on April 17, 1933, in Milwaukee, WI, to Magdalen and Ralph Giesfeldt, Susan was
baptized and confirmed at Golgotha Lutheran Church. Susan graduated from the
Milwaukee Girls’ Trade and Technical High School; she continued her education at
Milwaukee Vocational Institute. Susan worked at the offices of Standard Oil Company in
Milwaukee before marrying Buford E. Floy of Thornton, IA, on November 27, 1954.
After relocating to Thornton, Iowa; she became a dedicated partner in agriculture and
raised their four children on the family farm.

Susan was a devoted member of her community and church, participating in the choir, teaching
Sunday school, and serving on the Altar Guild. She expressed her creativity through sewing,
weaving, making banners, and cooking wild game. Susan also enjoyed playing Bridge with her
Clear Lake group and was known for her love of travel. She attended over 70 Road Scholar
(Elderhostel) programs and visited every county courthouse in the State of Iowa. Susan kept
active taking care of the acreage she lived on, mowing lawn on her John Deere and doing yard
work. Along with her husband she gave their children “wings” to pursue their dreams.

She is survived by her children, Barbara (David) Laidlaw, of San Jose, CA, Thomas Floy, of
Thornton, IA, Angela Floy, of Indianapolis, IN and Rebecca (Tom) Spence, of San Rafael, CA;
her grandchildren, Emily and Joshua Spence; along with several nieces and nephews.
Susan was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, Buford E. Floy, her parents, and her
two brothers from Milwaukee.
