Soybean harvest almost complete in north-central Iowa

DES MOINES — The soybean harvest in north-central Iowa is almost complete, while the corn harvest here locally is just over the three-quarter mark of being completed. That’s according to the USDA’s crop report for Iowa issued on Monday.
USDA Iowa ag statistician Melissa Couch says just over 90% of the soybean harvest has been completed statewide. “Soybeans harvested reached 91%, one week ahead of last year and almost two weeks ahead of the average. Farmers in northern Iowa, as well as west central and east central, have already harvested 94% or more of their soybeans.” The north-central crop reporting district had the highest percentage of soybeans harvested of the nine crop reporting districts at 97%.
Couch says about 70% of the state’s corn crop has been harvested. “Nearly all of Iowa’s corn crop reached the mature stage or beyond. Harvest of the corn for grain crop reached 68% complete, five days ahead of last year and ten days ahead of the five-year average. Farmers in south central Iowa remained behind farmers in the rest of the state with just 50% of their crop harvested. Moisture content of field corn being harvested was 15%.” Here in the north-central district, 77% of the corn had been harvested.
Couch says the dry conditions continue to be an issue for farmers as field and equipment fires were reported during the last week throughout the state.
