Swaledale man arrested after standoff receives deferred judgment, probation

SWALEDALE — A Swaledale man accused of pointing a shotgun at a law enforcement officer which resulted in a standoff has been given a deferred judgment and probation.
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office was called on March 4th to the 400 block of Main Street in Swaledale to deal with a person in crisis, with the first deputy on the scene stating that he found 43-year-old John Jackson in distress inside his kitchen, holding a shotgun. Jackson then put down the shotgun and charged the deputy, engaging in a fight where he grabbed the deputy’s handgun and tried to take it away.
A number of law enforcement agencies responded and secured the area before Jackson surrendered.
Jackson was charged with attempting to disarm a peace officer, a Class D felony.
As part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, Jackson pleaded guilty to the charge and requested a deferred judgment. District Associate Judge Adam Sauer on Monday sentenced Jackson to three years of probation and that he complete all recommended mental health treatment.
