Garner man sentenced to 25 years in prison on vehicular homicide charge in northwest Iowa

EMMETSBURG — A Garner man has started serving his sentence for vehicular homicide after being sentenced earlier this month in northwestern Iowa.
47-year-old Brian Freeman was charged after a head-on collision in Palo Alto County in June 2022. A criminal complaint states that Freeman was westbound on US Highway 18 near Cylinder when he crossed over the center line and struck an eastbound vehicle operated by 26-year-old Landon Schiek of Algona. Freeman admitted to officers on the scene that he had been drinking, and a test later showed Freeman’s blood alcohol content level was at .117, over the legal limit of .08.
A Palo Alto County jury found Freeman guilty of vehicular homicide while operating under the influence, a Class B felony. Freeman was recently sentenced to 25 years in prison with credit for time served and was ordered to pay just under $6100 in restitution to the Crime Victim Assistance Program.
