Hinson seeking third term to US House
MASON CITY — North-central Iowa congresswoman Ashley Hinson is seeking her third term in the US House. The Republican from Marion represents the northeastern Iowa based Second District, which includes Cerro Gordo, Worth, Mitchell, Floyd and Butler counties in our immediate listening area.
Hinson says her record in congress shows she’s the best choice on the ballot. “I have protected taxpayers. I’ve stood up for our rural values and our way of life here, and I’m making sure that we have a safe and secure country, and those are my priorities and that has not changed over the last four years. Everything I’ve executed on, everything I’ve introduced as bills and the work I’m doing as an appropriator are all designed to make sure I’m helping support our communities here. Whether it’s targeted investments in Cerro Gordo County that are helping with economic development, or policies that are going to help protect maternal health care in the district, those are all things that I’ve heard from Iowans that they want me to prioritize.”
Hinson says rising costs and tax policies are concerns she’s hearing from constituents on the campaign trail. “People are concerned about inflation still, the new baseline of how much things cost. That’s a real tax on Iowa families. Next year, if we don’t do something, the tax cuts will expire from 2017. If the average family is going to experience a tax increase that’s the equivalent to about seven weeks of groceries, that in my mind means we need to do something to protect that. Inflation is still the biggest issue because it’s about making sure people have more of their own money.”
Hinson says she’s also hearing about national security concerns. “The other issue I continue hearing about, and this is a safety and security issue, but it’s our border and then it’s what’s happening on the global stage. People are really worried about international conflicts and the escalation that’s happening around the world. For me, as a member of Congress, that means we need to prioritize defense, we need strong global leadership. I’m hoping we get President Trump back in office because I don’t think Putin would have invaded Ukraine, I don’t think Iran would be taking the posture towards Israel that they are taking if we didn’t have Biden in office currently, so I’m hopeful we get President Trump back in so we can continue to project strength on the world stage.”
Hinson is being challenged by Democrat Sarah Corkery of Cedar Falls and independent candidate Jody Puffett
