High school football playoffs tonight — Clear Lake at Humboldt — West Hancock, St. Ansgar, Osage second round games

HUMBOLDT — The high school football playoffs head into the round of 16 today with second round games in the lower classes and first round contests in the upper classes. For Clear Lake, it’s a rematch from two weeks ago as they face district foe Humboldt in a Class 3A first round game. The Wildcats won the first contest 23-13, but Lions coach Aaron Stensland says limiting mistakes and penalties will be a key in the contest.

Humboldt coach Derrick Elman says his team knows they’ll be challenged tonight.

— Two area Class A teams are looking to make it into the quarterfinal round of the playoffs.

== West Hancock will host Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union in Britt tonight. The Eagles are 9-0 after taking care of Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn 65-27 in the opening round last week, while MMC-RU beat Logan-Magnolia 47-14 in the first round last week. The pre-game starts at 6:30 with the kickoff scheduled for 7 o’clock.

== St. Ansgar hits the road to face Wapsie Valley. The Saints are 8-1 after a 54-14 win over South Winneshiek while 7-2 Wapsie Valley cruised to a 50-6 win in their opening playoff game over Lake Mills. Kickoff in Fairbank is scheduled for 7 o’clock.

 

 

 

SPIRIT LAKE — Osage travels to Spirit Lake in a Class 2A second round contest tonight. The Green Devils are 6-3, beating Jesup in the first round last week 53-13. Spirit Lake is 8-1 and held off a comeback attempt by Cherokee Washington last week in a 31-27 victory. Kickoff in Spirit Lake tonight is scheduled for 7 o’clock.
