State cross country — North Iowa’s Grunhovd wins 1A boys race, Lake Mills takes 1A boys team title

FORT DODGE — Gavin Grunhovd of North Iowa won the Class 1A boys cross country state championship on Saturday while Lake Mills took home the 1A boys team title. The senior Grunhovd won the race in a time of 15:57, eight seconds faster than second-place Gunner Wagner of Woodbine. Lake Mills had three runners place in the top 15 overall to give them the title with 88 points. Ankeny Christian was second with 132 points followed by Woodbine with 144. Hayden Thompson placed fifth in a time of 16:12 to lead the Bulldogs.
— Earlham took home the 1A girls team title with 91 points, with Madrid finishing second with 109. Kadence Huck of Nashua-Plainfield finished sixth in a time of 19:11 while Lauren Hillesland finished 15th in a time of 19:40.
— Scarlett Byrnes of Osage finished fifth in the Class 2A girls race. The Green Devils junior finished in a time of 18:47, 35 seconds behind the winner. Bethany Warren of Forest City finished 10th in a time of 19:22. Mid-Prairie of Wellman won the team title with 84 points, with Unity Christian finishing second with 92 points. Forest City finished ninth as a team with 232 points.
— The Garner-Hayfield-Ventura boys finished sixth while Forest City finished tenth in the 2A boys team race. Oelwein won with 113 points, GHV had 179 while Forest City had 216. Zach Flatebo of GHV finished sixth in a time of 16:10, 33 seconds off the winning pace. Silas Gann had Forest City’s best finish, ending 24th in a time of 16:57.
