Soybean harvest wraps up, corn harvest over 90% completed

DES MOINES — Despite a few days of rain, the soybean harvest all but wrapped up last week in the state and the corn harvest isn’t too far behind. That’s according to the new USDA crop report for Iowa released on Monday.

USDA Iowa ag statistician Melissa Couch says there were four-point-seven days suitable for fieldwork statewide this past week, but farmers were able to harvest corn and soybeans, complete fall tillage, and apply fall fertilizer and manure.

Couch says the corn harvest is still ahead of last year.  “Harvest of the corn for grain crop reached 92%, six days ahead of last year and two weeks ahead of the five-year average. Moisture content of field corn harvested for grain remained steady at 14%.”

Here in north-central Iowa, 96% of the corn had been harvested, only trailing the northwest Iowa crop reporting district, which had 97% harvested.
