Mason City man originally charged with attempted murder sentenced to five years

MASON CITY — It’s five years in prison for a Mason City man who originally was charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge.

19-year-old Jerell McKnight was accused of shooting a male during an incident outside of MidTown Liquor and Vape at 824 North Federal on June 14th. A criminal complaint stated that the male victim received non-life threatening injuries.

McKnight was originally charged with attempted murder, a Class B felony, but pleaded guilty to two counts of willful injury resulting in bodily injury, each charge being a Class D felony.

District Associate Judge Adam Sauer sentenced McKnight on Wednesday to five years in prison on each charge, with the sentences to be served at the same time.
