Corn harvest all but done in north-central Iowa

DES MOINES — The corn harvest is all but done here in north-central Iowa, but wet weather last week slowed down the progress of the harvest in most parts of the state according to this week’s crop report from the US Department of Agriculture.

USDA Iowa ag statistician Melissa Couch says there were 3.3 days suitable for field work statewide last week, but despite that, the corn harvest progress is still way ahead of previous years.   “Harvest of the corn for grain crop reached 95% statewide, four days ahead of last year and 12 days ahead of the five-year average. Farmers in south-central Iowa still have over 15% of their corn for grain remaining to be harvested. Moisture content of field corn harvested for grain remained steady at 14%.”

The USDA report shows the north-central district reported 99% of the corn planted had been harvested for grain, the highest of  the state’s nine crop reporting districts.
