Britt man sentenced to 25 years for attempted murder

GARNBER — It’s 25 years in prison for a Britt man found guilty of attempted murder and willful injury resulting in serious injury.

36-year-old Alexander Padilla was accused of getting into a conflict with a male in the 1100 block of 270th Street in rural Britt on June 19th. A criminal complaint filed by the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office stated that Padilla admitted to having engaged in a fight with the victim at the victim’s residence, and during the fight retrieving a firearm from his vehicle and shooting the victim. The victim had to be flown to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center in Mason City for treatment.

The victim told law enforcement two days later that he had gotten into a physical fight with Padilla and told him to leave the property, with Padilla later shooting him.

A Hancock County jury in September found Padilla guilty of the two charges after three days of testimony.

District Judge Colleen Weiland sentenced Padilla on Tuesday to 25 years in prison on the attempted murder charge, with a mandatory requirement that he serve at least 70% or 17-and-a-half years of the term prior to being considered for parole. She sentenced Padilla to ten years on the willful injury charge. The terms will be served at the same time.
