NIACC basketball sweeps Southwestern

MASON CITY – The No. 16 NIACC women’s basketball team cruised to a 86-45 victory over Southwestern CC Wednesday night in an ICCAC contest in the NIACC gym.

NIACC (10-2 overall, 3-1 in the ICCAC) led 25-6 after the first quarter and pushed its lead to 43-17 at the half.

The Trojans, who were playing without injured point guard Alexis Schroeder for the first time, put four players in double figures. Sophomore Keeley Steele led the Trojans with 16 points, 11 rebounds, seven assists and four steals.

Also for the Trojans, sophomore Sonya Potthoff scored 14 points, freshman Kelsey McDonough scored 13 points and sophomore Tori Miller scored 10 points.

NIACC freshman Reggi Spotts scored seven points with six rebounds, three steals and one assist. The Trojans’ Karly Holm scored nine points with two steals.

Miller also added five rebounds, two assists and two steals.

NIACC returns to action at home Friday and Saturday against Lake Region State College in a pair of non-conference contests. The Friday contest is slated to start at 5 p.m. with the Saturday tilt beginning at 1 p.m.

MASON CITY – The NIACC men’s basketball team remained perfect in the ICCAC with a 81-72 victory over Southwestern CC Wednesday night in the NIACC gym.

The Trojans (11-2 overall) pushed their league mark to 4-0 heading into the Dec. 18 showdown against No. 5 Kirkwood in the NIACC gym. It is the first time the Trojans have been 4-0 in league play since the 2019-20 season.

In Wednesday’s win over the Spartans, sophomore guard Brayden Drea led the Trojans with a career-high 24 points, including 16 points in the second half. Drea was 7 of 11 from the field, including three 3-point goals, and was 7 of 8 from the free-throw line.

Drea’s previous career high was 17 points against the Mount Mercy University Junior Varsity on Nov. 7, 2024.

Also for the Trojans Wednesday, freshman guard Randy McClendon came off the bench to score a career-best 17 points. McClendon’s previous career high was 15 points against DCTC on Nov. 2, 2024.

NIACC’s Omarion Roberts, the reigning ICCAC player of the week, scored 11 points with nine rebounds, nine assists and two steals.

NIACC’s Cameron Reigard scored seven points with six rebounds, four assists and one steal. The Trojans’ Zion Wright scored seven points wth seven rebounds.

NIACC was 19 of 25 from the free throw line in Wednesday’s contest, including a 16 of 18 performance from the charity stripe in the second half.

NIACC sits atop the ICCAC with its 4-0 mark. No. 3 DMACC (12-1 overall) is a half game back in the league with a record of 3-0.
