Hinson calls out DC mayor on public safety concerns

WASHINGTON — North-central Iowa congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she’s among a group of Republicans who are concerned about public safety in Washington DC.
During a meeting of the House Appropriations Committee last week, Hinson addressed the concerns with DC mayor Muriel Bowser. Hinson says she wants Iowans coming to Washington are safe. “My office welcomes Iowans to Washington DC every single day, whether it’s a middle school history class or a family that’s here on vacation. It is my priority that every single Iowan who comes here feels safe if they are visiting DC. This is to me, it’s more than about DC. It’s about ensuring that every state in the nation prioritizes public safety, and I believe our nation’s capitol should set the example for a safe, secure and clean environment.”
Hinson says DC officials should have the attitude of providing the safest environment possible for Iowans and everyone coming to Washington. “Unfortunately that is no longer the case due to the mayor’s soft on crime policies that have continuously put criminals over victims. 2023 was DC’s deadliest year in more than two decades. Every time I look at the news, I see a new report of a violent incident, carjacking, assault or a theft. During the hearing, I pressed Mayor Bowser on her plan to stem these high levels of violent crime in DC and how she plans to support law enforcement officers.”
President-elect Trump suggested during the campaign that he would dissolve the local government in Washington DC and have the federal government run everything in the district
