Cerro Gordo supervisors approve Prairie Land Trail Connector project, Mason City council to approve tonight

MASON CITY — The City Council in Mason City tonight is being asked to approve the contract for a section of trail that’s part of the city’s Destination Iowa project.
One bid was received for the Prairie Land Trail Connector project that extends through city and county rights-of-way to connect the Trolley Trail at South Taft Avenue and 19th Street Southwest and the Prairie Land Trail trailhead located west of Taft Avenue along 240th Street. The city and Cerro Gordo County are sharing the costs of the project since the project is inside and outside of the city limits.
The Cerro Gordo County Board of Supervisors at their meeting on Monday approved awarding their portion of the project to Heartland Asphalt of Mason City. County Engineer Brandon Billings says despite there being only one bidder on the project, it came in under the estimate. “They came in under their estimate by about $40,000, so they are asking us to accept it. The only bidder is Heartland Asphalt, and that was for $556,315.84. I guess I would ask you to accept or reject that, with my recommendation to accept it based on what the city said.”
The city council will vote on accepting their portion of the project tonight during their meeting at 7 o’clock in the Mason City Room of the Public Library.
