Now that Farm Bill extension is done, Hinson says Prop 12 needs to be addressed

WASHINGTON — Now that a one-year extension of the Farm Bill has been passed as part of the continuing budget resolution approved by Congress last week, the new Republican-controlled Congress will look at getting a new five-year Farm Bill passed in 2025.
North-central Iowa congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she hopes Congress will address California’s Proposition 12 law as part of a new bill. “I hope that in the next Congress, we are able to pass a new Farm Bill, and again, since that language has already been negotiated to allow California to regulate its own producers but not to regulate Iowa producers, which was what we were trying to get accomplished is make sure our pork producers can do what they do best while still having access to the California markets. I’m hopeful that will again be in a new Farm Bill package next year as its reintroduced.”
Hinson says she’ll continue to fight against Prop 12. “That will continue to be my rally cry to help make sure our producers have the certainty that they need and continue to push back against this ‘woke bacon ban’ coming out of California.”
National Pork Producers Council president Lori Stevermer has said that Prop 12 has increased operating costs for pork producers and created future business uncertainty.
