Mason City man originally charged with attempted murder in Floyd County indicted on federal charge

CEDAR RAPIDS — A Mason City man originally charged with five counts of attempted murder in Floyd County has now been federally indicted.
30-year-old Evan Stalker was arrested after Floyd County authorities were called to a report of shots being fired in the 3100 block of 220th Street in rural Charles City on the night of July 9th. Stalker was accused of calling a female victim and making a threat to shoot up her car and house. At the victim’s residence, Stalker issued more threats of a similar nature against the woman and four other occupants inside the home. Stalker allegedly fired his weapon, but there was no indication of any shots hitting the house, vehicles or any of the subjects inside. Search warrants were executed on Stalker’s vehicle as well as his residence in Mason City, with additional evidence gathered from both.
Stalker had originally pleaded not guilty to five counts of attempted murder, each a Class B felony, as well as separate counts of being in possession of a firearm as a domestic abuse offender and first-degree harassment. His trial was scheduled to start today in Floyd County District Court, but those charges were dismissed on December 23rd pending the federal indictment.
That federal indictment on one count of making a false statement during the attempted purchase of a firearm was unsealed on Friday, and states that when Stalker tried to purchase a pistol from a licensed dealer on July 8th, he provided a false written statement that he had never been committed to a mental institution.
Stalker is scheduled to be in US District Court in Cedar Rapids today for his initial appearance and arraignment.
