Grassley memorializes President Carter during speech on Senate floor

WASHINGTON — Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley paid tribute to Jimmy Carter during a speech in the United States Senate on Wednesday.
Grassley talked about Carter’s impact on Americans. “This week our nation mourns the loss of our 39th president, Jimmy Carter. With grief comes reflection on his life — a life well lived,” Grassley said. “There’s no doubt Jimmy Carter made an impact on scores of Americans.”
During the speech, Grassley praised Carter’s work after he left the White House, including his work with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for the needy. Grassley says Carter answered the call to serve his nation in many different ways. “We remember him as a naval officer and his call to serve in public service, as our president of the United States and his call to serve those in need after leaving the White House.”
Today is a National Day of Mourning to honor former President Jimmy Carter. Today marks Carter’s official state funeral in Washington. As part of the Day of Mourning, all federal offices will be closed today, and the US Postal Service will be closed and mail will not be delivered. Most banks WILL remain open today, but the major stock markets will be closed.
Carter’s funeral at the National Cathedral in Washington is scheduled to begin this morning at 10 a.m. Iowa time.
