LULAC dismisses lawsuit attempting to stop Iowa voter integrity law

DES MOINES — The League of United Latin American Citizens of Iowa has dismissed its lawsuit attempting to block a voting reform law that went into effect in Iowa four years ago.

LULAC Iowa originally filed the lawsuit after Governor Reynolds signed Senate File 413, which reduced Iowa’s early voting period from 29 to 20 days, closed polls an hour earlier on Election Day, and also placed tighter restrictions on absentee ballot voting. LULAC and Democratic lawmakers had called the law voter suppression, while Republicans said it was necessary to make Iowans confident that elections were secure.

After LULAC’s withdrawal of their lawsuit, Iowa’s Secretary of State Paul Pate said in a written statement that “we are pleased to move on from this baseless lawsuit and remain committed to securing Iowa’s elections through a layered approach that balances voter participation and election integrity.”
