Iowa Legislature starts 2025 session today

DES MOINES — Republicans hold a supermajority in both the House and Senate as the 2025 Iowa legislative session gets underway today in Des Moines.
The majority in the House has grown from 64 to 67, meaning a two-thirds supermajority. Senate Republicans have held a supermajority for the past two years and have one again this year as Democrats only hold 15 seats in the Senate.
Republican lawmakers say setting new limits on property taxes is their top priority this session.
The legislature convenes this morning at 10:00 AM.
Governor Reynolds will give her “Condition of the State” address at 6 o’clock Tuesday evening. This week also sees the “Condition of the Judiciary” speech by Supreme Court Chief Justice Susan Christensen on Wednesday morning, as well as the “Condition of the National Guard” speech on Thursday by Iowa National Guard Adjutant General Stephen Osborn.
