Mason City man charged with attempted murder ruled not competent to stand trial

MASON CITY — A Mason City man accused of multiple charges including attempted murder has been ruled as not competent to stand trial.

20-year-old Travun York was booked into the Cerro Gordo County Jail this past May on charges of attempted murder, willful injury causing serious injury, three counts of third-degree burglary and one count of fourth-degree criminal mischief.

York is accused of multiple break ins in December 2022 at the Mason City Arena, EZ Pawn at 1417 4th Southwest, and at a home in the 900 block of North Kentucky. He’s also accused of a robbery at B&B Coin at 1631 4th Southwest on March 25th of last year where he allegedly stole a bag containing $12,000.

On May 14th of last year, York allegedly stabbed a person in the face, head and neck during an attack in the zero block of North Monroe Avenue, with the victim suffering serious injuries.

York’s attorney in November asked that a competency evaluation be performed after Cerro Gordo County Jail staff expressed concerns about his behaviors.

District Judge Rustin Davenport during a hearing on Monday ruled York was not competent to stand trial as he is suffering from a mental disorder which prevents him from appreciating the charge, understanding the proceedings or assisting effectively in the defense. Davenport ordered that York be taken to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center for treatment in an attempt to restore York’s competency.
