Charles City woman accused of stealing money from elderly victim sentenced to probation

CHARLES CITY — One of two Charles City woman accused of stealing over $100,000 from an elderly Floyd County person has been given a suspended sentence.

65-year-old Sondra Newberry and 37-year-old Charmaine Carr were originally charged with financial exploitation of an older individual, a Class B felony.

A criminal complaint stated that both had power of attorney for their elderly victim and withdrew $127,837 from the victim’s bank account between January 2020 and December 2023. The complaint states that no records were kept of receipts, payouts or transactions and the money was not used in the best interest of the victim.

Newberry this week pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree theft, an aggravated misdemeanor, and was given a two-year suspended prison sentence and placed on one year probation.

Carr last month pleaded guilty to fifth-degree theft and was sentenced to one year probation.
