MASON CITY — Former Mason City state legislator John Groninga has died.
Groninga served in the Iowa House from 1983 to 1993. During that time he was involved in many issues regarding taxes, insurance, economic development and the environment. He managed the passage of the Iowa Resource Enhancement and Protection bill and the Industrial Jobs and Training Act.
Groninga taught English and reading at Mason City High School from 1970-1980 and was an English instructor at North Iowa Area Community College from 1985-2010, serving as division chair of the department during a portion of that time. Groninga also served on the Lime Creek Nature Center Board and was a member of the Mason City Planning and Zoning Commission for 22 years.
An obituary on the Fullerton Funeral Home website says Groninga passed away at home on Friday. Per his wishes, no services are planned at this time.
