Grassley says Trump must follow process in firing Inspectors General

WASHINGTON — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Iowa Republican Chuck Grassley is joining Democratic Ranking Member Dick Durbin in sending a letter to the White House requesting President Trump provide the lawfully-required rationale behind his recent decision to dismiss Inspectors General from 18 offices.
They are also asking the White House to share the names of each official who will serve in an acting Inspectors General capacity, and are urging the President to quickly nominate qualified and non-partisan individuals to permanently fill the current vacancies.
Grassley says Trump must follow the law. “IGs like most people that the president appoints aren’t immune from removal. They can be removed by a president, any president, but the law must be followed, and that law says that they should give us a 30-day notice with specific reasons for firing. That hasn’t been done, and that should be done regardless of who is President of the United States.”
Inspectors General are non-partisan watchdogs that are responsible for identifying and rooting out waste, fraud and abuse at federal agencies.
