NIACC men’s wrestling downs Hawkeye Community College, women drop dual

MASON CITY – The No. 10 NIACC men’s wrestling team topped Hawkeye Community College 37-15 in an ICCAC dual meet Wednesday night in the NIACC recreation center.

NIACC won six of the eight contested matches. the Trojans picked up falls from Luis Acevedo (125) and Hansel Pompa (157) and technical falls from McKenley Charelus (141), Emmanuel Celestin (165) and Jessey Colas (184).

The Trojans’ Macray Klohs gained a major decision at 197 pounds.

The Trojans (4-3 overall in duals, 3-2 in ICCAC) wrap up their dual season on Feb. 5 at home against Iowa Western. The dual meet is slated to start at 7 p.m. in the NIACC recreation center.

MASON CITY – The No. 10 NIACC women’s wrestling team dropped a 33-16 decision to Hawkeye Community College Wednesday night in an ICCAC dual meet in the NIACC recreation center.

NIACC picked up wins from Maria Sanfiel (145), Carly Klein (160) and Valerie Smith (235).

At 145 pounds, Sanfiel pinned Hawkeye CC’s Melody Kremer in 1 minute, 51 seconds.

At 160 pounds, Klein pinned Meya Roberts in 2:58.

At 235 pounds, Smith, who is ranked No. 2, pinned Makenna Fetters in :52.

NIACC returns to action Saturday at the Grand View Open

110 – Ella Hron (H) won by forfeit; 117 – Mia Kurth (H) pinned Maria Roque, 1:09; 124 – Chloe Sokolik (H) pinned Jenesis Sanders, 1:49; 131 – Rylee Steffen (H) won by forfeit; 138 – Cienna Ficken (H) dec. Keira Suro, 5-4.

145 – Maria Sanfiel (N) pinned Melody Kremer, 1:51; 160 – Carly Klein (N) pinned Meya Roberts, 2:58; 180 – Rory Siems (H) pinned Emery Hippen, 2:04; 207 – Alyson Krum (H) pinned Destine’e Thomas, :34; 235 – Valerie Smith (N) pinned Makenna Fetters, :52.
MASON CITY – The NIACC women’s basketball team dropped a 86-77 decision to Ellsworth Wednesday in an ICCAC contest in the NIACC gym.

Ellsworth was led by Ella Sharar with 24 points. Rosario Mera Pandero was next in line for the Panthers with 18 points and Laia Santanach scored 16 points.

The Panthers (18-3 overall, 9-2 in the ICCAC) outscored the Trojans 25-17 in the fourth quarter to claim the nine-point victory.

NIACc (17-5, 8-4) was led by sophomore Keeley Steele with 20 points. Freshman Reggi Spotts scored 17 points for the Trojans.

Sophomore Tori Miller and sophomore Karly Holm both scored 12 points for the Trojans.

Steele also had five assists, three rebounds and three steals. Miller collected seven rebounds with four assists and two steals.

Freshman Kiru Othow scored nine points with three rebounds. Freshman Tayler Helgemoe led the Trojans with four blocked shots.

NIACC returns to action Saturday at No. 1 Kirkwood. Game time in Cedar Rapids is slated for 1 p.m.
