Floyd County stop results in Minnesota man, St. Louis woman being arrested on drug charges

CHARLES CITY — A Minnesota man and a Missouri woman have been arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop near Charles City early this morning.

Criminal complaints filed in Floyd County District Court say the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office conducted a stop at the 227 mile marker of US Highway 218 at about 1:40 this morning for a traffic violation. The deputy says a strong odor of marijuana was present coming from inside the vehicle, and during a search, two dispensary bags containing about 14 grams of a green leafy substance were discovered, which when field tested came back positive for cannabis.

Also during the search, a purse was located, with a glass jar inside the purse containing a substance that later tested positive for about 21 grams of methamphetamine. A nine-milimeter glock handgun with a loaded extended magazine was also in the purse.

On further investigation, the driver, 41-year-old James Davis of Brooklyn Park, allegedly handed over two clear plastic bags of multi-colored tablets that he was possessing, saying they were ecstasy. The complaint says Davis admitted that he was taking the tablets to a relative from St. Louis to Minnesota.

Davis and 40-year-old Ashley Smith of St. Louis were charged with a Class B-level controlled substance violation and possession of marijuana first offense, a serious misdemeanor. Smith was also charged with possession of meth first offense.

Both made their initial appearance in Floyd County court this morning.
