Grassley continues “wait-and-see” approach to Trump tariffs

WASHINGTON — President Trump agreed on Monday to 30-day pauses on tariffs against Canada and Mexico after America’s two largest trading partners took steps to appease his concerns about border security and drug trafficking.

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley says while he’s been skeptical of Trump’s policy, he continues to take a “wait-and-see” approach. “I’ve told you before that I may have questions about the president’s approach, but I’m going to take a wait-and-see attitude towards it. I hope he’s successful. If he is, I will praise him. If he isn’t, I will say I told you so. I’m glad that he is fighting for what he thinks will be fairer trade. One of his goals in doing this is to stop the flow of drugs and illegal immigration across our borders.”

Grassley is pleading with Trump to exempt potash from the tariffs proposed for Canada. “Farmers were already hit by 20% increases in input costs because of Biden inflation. We don’t need tariffs on potash coming from Canada, so I would hope if there is tariffs on Canada, which there isn’t going to be now for at least 30 days that potash would be exempt.”

Potash is a key component of fertilizers, as it’s a source of potassium that plays a critical role in crop growth and yield quality.
