Most schools closed, some delayed due to extreme cold

MASON CITY — A majority of north-central Iowa schools are closed, with a handful of schools choosing a two-hour delay this morning due to the extreme cold conditions throughout the area. Mason City and Clear Lake community schools both cancelled their classes today.

An Extreme Cold Warning continues until noon today for the listening area as we expect to see 30 to 40 below wind chills through the rest of the morning. A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect from 6:00 PM this evening until noon on Wednesday.

The wind chill is expected to be as low as 32 below overnight.

Dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as ten minutes. Frostbite and hypothermia will occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures.

Make sure you are dressing in layers including a hat, face mask and gloves if you must go outside. Keep pets indoors as much as possible. Make frequent checks on older family, friends and neighbors.
