Boys district basketball roundup — Newman, Osage, GHV, Lake Mills all fall in district finals

WEBSTER CITY — St. Edmond used a 20-6 second-half run as the 4th-ranked Gaels came back from a one-point halftime deficit to beat Newman 63-54 in the Class 1A District 4 championship boys basketball game last night played in Webster City. St. Edmond used the run to take the score from 25-24 Newman at half to lead 48-33 at the end of the third quarter. St. Edmond improves to 21-3 overall with the victory. Newman finishes the season with a record of 17-5. They were led by Thomas McGuire, who had 19 points, and Westley Cole, who added 15.

ESTHERVILLE — Osage and Garner-Hayfield-Ventura lost their district championship games as part of a Class 2A Substate 1 boys basketball doubleheader in Estherville last night. In the District 2 championship game, Spirit Lake broke away from a one-point lead over the Green Devils after the first quarter, leading 33-14 at halftime on their way to a 71-42 victory. Osage ends their season with a record of 18-6.
== In the second game, 4th-ranked Unity Christian only led by two at half, but utilized a 23-14 advantage in the third quarter to beat Garner-Hayfield-Ventura 67-54. Nicholas Zrostlik had 19 points to lead the Cardinals, who end their season with a record of 10-15. Unity Christian improves to 19-4 and will face Spirit Lake in the 2A Substate 1 championship game on Saturday night in Sheldon.
