Cancer rates rising in Iowa according to new annual report

IOWA CITY — The state of Iowa has the second-highest cancer rate in the country and it has the fastest-rising rate of new cancer cases. That’s according to the new Cancer in Iowa Report released on Tuesday.

The Iowa Cancer Registry based at The University of Iowa says they estimate there will be 21,200 new cancer cases diagnosed among Iowans this year, an increase of 200 from last year, with breast, prostate, lung, and colorectal cancers continuing to make up roughly half of all cancer cases.

The Iowa Cancer Registry has tracked cancer cases, survival rates and deaths from cancer in the state of Iowa since 1973.

The report says there will be about 6300 cancer deaths among Iowans this year, an increase of 200 from last year, with lung cancer continuing to be the most common cause of cancer deaths in Iowa.

Iowa Cancer Registry officials say the report allows doctors and researchers to focus on how to prevent and treat cancer as well as provides Iowans with the knowledge needed to get advance screening and improve survival rates.
