Flags flying at half-staff today to honor former Iowa Senate president Jack Kibbie

DES MOINES — Flags are flying at half-staff today to honor former Iowa Senate president Jack Kibbie.

Kibbie was a farmer from Emmetsburg who served in the Iowa House from 1960 to 1964, and was a member of the Iowa Senate from 1964 to 1968 and again from 1988 to 2012.

Kibbie served as a tank commander in the US Army during the Korean War, and received a Bronze Star for his service to his country. During the Iraq War, Kibbie was instrumental in creating Veterans Committees in the Iowa Senate and House and ensuring the Iowa National Guard’s Adjutant General delivers an annual address to the state legislature.

Governor Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa today to be lowered to half-staff and remain there until sunset in honor and remembrance of Kibbie.

== Governor Reynolds has also ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff on Saturday to honor former Iowa Attorney General Evan “Curley” Hultman.

Hultman served in that position from 1961 to 1965, and he also served as a United States district attorney under three presidencies. Hultman enlisted in the United States Army in 1943 and fought for his country during World War II. He remained in the Army Reserve for a half-century, rising to the rank of major general in 1980. Hultman was awarded the Army’s Distinguished Service Medal in 1984 and the Secretary of Defense Distinguished Public Service Medal in 1994.

Hultman died on February 16th at the age of 99. His funeral takes place tomorrow in Waterloo
