Clear Lake council tonight to discuss fire protection agreements with townships

CLEAR LAKE — The Clear Lake City Council tonight is being asked to renew fire protection agreements with townships surrounding the community.

Acting City Administrator Jacob Widman says the city entered into ten-year agreements in 2015 with the Clear Lake, Grant, Lake, Lincoln, Mount Vernon and Union townships. Those agreements are set to expire at the end of the fiscal year on June 30th. Widman says new five-year agreements are being proposed to replace the expiring agreements.

He says the new agreements are similar in content to the previous agreements. Under the terms, the city shall provide the necessary fire-fighting apparatus and equipment, as well as the personnel from the fire department for the furnishing of fire protection and other emergency assistance.

The cost of the service is calculated based on a formula that factors in valuations, call volumes, population, and the fire department’s average budget for the past four years.

The Clear Lake City Council meets tonight at 5:30 at City Hall.
