Mason City man pleads guilty to burglary charge

MASON CITY — A Mason City man charged with robbery, burglary and false imprisonment stemming from an incident two years ago has pleaded guilty to a lesser charge as part of a plea agreement.

25-year-old Jonathan Scott was accused of being at a home in the 200 block of North Jefferson on August 29th 2023 with another male. A criminal complaint states the victim stated that Scott allegedly pointed what looked to be a handgun at the victim’s torso while in the home’s enclosed front porch. Scott then allegedly escorted the victim into his house and demanded money. The complaint states that Scott took about $965 from the bedroom and living room areas of the house.

Scott was at-large until he was arrested on January 20th in Illinois and eventually brought back to

Iowa. Scott was charged with first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary, each a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison, as well as false imprisonment, a serious misdemeanor.

Scott’s trial was scheduled to start on April 1st, but court documents show that Scott as part of a plea deal has pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary and has agreed to be sentenced to five years in prison.

A formal plea change hearing has been scheduled for March 31st in Cerro Gordo County District Court.
