Today is “Wright on the Park Day” in Mason City
MASON CITY — Today has been declared as “Wright on the Park Day” in Mason City. It recognizes the 20th anniversary of the incorporation of the Wright on the Park organization as it was their mission to own, preserve, and maintain the Historic Park Inn Hotel that is the last remaining hotel in the world designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. The hotel opened in 2011 with the help of a Vision Iowa grant.
Mayor Bill Schickel says despite some doubters on the effort, the project helped start the transformation of the downtown area. “There was opposition at the time, no doubt about it. Everybody loves it now because it’s such a great thing. Downtown Mason City, Mason City in general, really experienced a resurgence because of that in all kinds of ways. New stores, the multi-purpose arena, new housing all over the place. So it’s really exciting to see what these founders got started and we’re so excited to be able to carry that on now.”
Schickel presented a proclamation to the current Wright on the Park board of directors at the meeting of the City Council on Tuesday night.
