Verla was born on September 23, 1933, in Peru, Nebraska to Loyd and Belva Nincehelser.  The Nincehelsers had a large family with 11 children, with Verla being the oldest child. Verla’s mother passed away when she was only 11 and she became instrumental in helping raise her younger siblings. Verla graduated from high school at the age of 16 and enrolled at Peru State University.  While attending college, Verla began working at a local bank and other jobs as well.  In 1952, Verla met Robert (Bob) Perry from Chicago.  The two were introduced by Bob’s college roommate and his girlfriend.

Verla and Bob were married on April 10, 1954 in Peru, Nebraska. After Bob graduated from Peru State, the couple began a series of moves for various teaching/coaching positions (Gray, IA; Elk Creek, NE; Meadow Grove, NE). Verla and Bob moved to Northwood, Iowa in 1963 and have stayed ever since. The couple welcomed their first child, Bobbi, in 1956 followed by Vicki in 1960 and Rick in 1967.  Verla worked as a bank teller at Northwood State Bank for many years, while Bob served as a teacher and coach at Northwood-Kensett Schools.  In the 1980’s, Verla began a successful craft business called “Sew What”. Verla was very active in both church and community activities.  She served the United Methodist Church for many years as Financial Secretary, Sunday school teacher, and started Wonderful Wednesdays. In the community of Northwood, Verla was the key in starting Founder’s Day in the early 2000’s.  Verla received the Citizen of the Year award in Northwood in 2004.  Verla and Bob were also steadfast in attending all their children’s sporting and musical events over the years. Later in life, Verla and Bob enjoyed traveling with friends and family.

Verla’s primary passion in life was her family- her husband, three children and their spouses, nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.  She spent countless hours visiting her children’s families and enjoying her grandchildren’s many activities. Grandma Verla was well known for slipping her grandchildren a piece of candy, even though she often thought it went unnoticed. Verla lived a long, fulfilling life with a loving family and many cherished friends. She will be fondly remembered for her many kind deeds, service to community her church, and loving gestures.
