Flooding the topic for final day of Severe Weather Awareness Week in Iowa

MASON CITY — Severe Weather Awareness Week in the state of Iowa wraps up today with the emphasis being on flood safety.
Cerro Gordo County Emergency Management Coordinator Eric Whipple says flooding situations should be taken seriously. “Flooding is the number one cause of deaths in severe weather. You’ve heard the term ‘Turn Around, Don’t Drown’. That’s very important because you don’t know what’s underneath those flooded waters, or if the road is even gone even, and that’s what kind of happens with folks who try to cross water when it’s flooded.”
Just 12 to 18 inches of water can wash away most vehicles. If your vehicle stops, abandon it and seek higher ground to prevent being swept away by the water along with your vehicle.
