Born on May 1, 1930, to Amos and Violetta (Henschen) Hughes on a farm near
Kanawha, Iowa, Ina graduated from Kanawha High School in 1947. She continued her
education at Britt Community College, earning her teaching certificate before beginning
her career as a country schoolteacher.

In 1948, Ina married Ben Mayland in Albert Lea, MN, and they made their home in Britt,
Iowa. Together, they raised three children: Roger, Ricky, and Darlene. In 1958, the
family moved to Clear Lake, where they became longtime members of Zion Lutheran
Church.

A dedicated member of her church and Circle, Ina also worked for over 20 years as
support staff in the Clear Lake School District office. She and Ben were avid Lion
supporters, attending numerous school sporting events, and were devoted fans of the
Iowa Hawkeyes and Minnesota Twins.

In retirement, Ina enjoyed gardening, golfing, bowling, traveling, and playing cards with
her in-laws. She cherished keeping up with her grandchildren’s and great-
grandchildren’s activities and always ensured her home was filled with homemade food
and treats. She was especially known for her delicious cinnamon rolls, cinnamon bread,
and cookies.

After Ben’s passing in 1983, Ina remained independent in her own home until the age of
94.

Lake; and Darlene Sheldon (Jerry Bellinghausen) of Forest City. She also leaves behind
seven grandchildren: Anders, Beck, Katie, Elliot, Troy, Danielle, Randie and Amanda;
six great-grandchildren: Harvey, Harper, Julianna, Hannah, Maesy, and Zeta; one great-
great-grandchild, Weston; her brother, Howard (Betty) Hughes of Humboldt; as well as
many nieces and nephews.

Ina was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ben, her sister, Janice
Johnson, and was the last surviving member of the aunts and uncles of the Fred
Mayland extended family.
