New estimates show upturn in Cerro Gordo County population for first time in a generation

MASON CITY — New estimates show the population in Cerro Gordo County has grown for the first time in a generation.

The new information from the US Census Bureau shows as of July of last year, the county’s population was reported at 42,493, an increase from 42,470 two years ago and 42,408 three years ago. The figures are based on data from births, deaths, domestic and international migration, and other relevant sources.

Mason City mayor Bill Schickel says the information is really exciting news. “You know, all of north Iowa really has seen a boon in housing recently and we’ve solidified our reputation as a destination for music, art, and outdoor recreation. Obviously there’s more work to be done, but boy this is exciting news.”

Although the latest census data shows a growth trend, it’s important to note that there’s been a 1.5% decline in population since the full census data was conducted in 2020. Schickel says a significant challenge remains as the number of deaths has consistently exceeded the number of births. The new data shows there was an increase in international migration, with new residents arriving in Cerro Gordo County.
