Voters may be receiving notices in mail about address changes, “no activity” status

MASON CITY — Cerro Gordo County voters may be receiving a mailer in the coming weeks as part of the annual voter registration list maintenance and ongoing audit processes.
County Auditor Adam Wedmore says the notices from the Iowa Secretary of State’s office are part of the National Change of Address process as well as “No Activity” notices. Wedmore says the change of address notification is sent because a voter may have moved and it’s an opportunity for that person to update their information before the next election. “This is a letter that states that we believe that the person who is registered to vote at that address has updated their address through the United States Postal Service but possibly hasn’t let us know for voting purposes. So somebody moves to a new house, a new city, new county, whatever, this is what gets registered with the postal service and then ultimately forwarded on to us so we can help maintain our voter registration lists.”
The “No Activity” notice may be sent to voters who did not participate in the 2024 General Election in November and have been transferred to an inactive status. Wedmore says voters can reactivate their activity status by simply responding to the notice or by simply voting in the next election. “The active and inactive status simply is a behind-the-scenes thing that just lets us monitor whether they’ve participated or not. If a voter does not vote in two consecutive general elections, they will be removed from the voter registration lists, but there will be additional mailings that come before that happens. Don’t feel like the voter, if they get this postcard, they are off the voter registration list, that’s certainly not true. It just means it’s begun that process, and if they choose to not vote two years in that next general election, they then could be removed from the voter registration list at that time.”
Voters who have questions regarding their voter registration status should contact the Cerro Gordo County Auditor’s office at 641-421-3041. Iowa voters can check or update their voter registration status at any time by heading to VoterReady.Iowa.gov.
