Engineering for the Allen Avenue Storm Sewer Project Begins in Garner

The Garner City Council is looking into getting the engineering done on the Allen Avenue Storm Sewer Project. According to Garner Mayor Tim Schmidt, the project addresses the standing storm water issue in the city.

About eight years ago, the city put in a large pipeline that extended from Cottonwood Avenue to the Iowa River. Schmidt stated that it resolved a lot of potential flooding issues in the city. The city was committed to alleviating basement flooding issues in that area and Schmidt believes that it worked. Now another phase, the Allen Avenue Storm Sewer Project looks to remove storm water from many other parts of the city.

The hope of this project is to channel the water away from the city and into the Iowa River according to Schmidt.

The Garner City Council is now tasked with having an engineering team go through the affected areas and determining the best course of action.

The city also has to devise a plan to drain storm water away from the new Garner Christian Child Care Center of GC4.

The city council was presented with initial plans by Drew Swears of V & K Engineering in their last council meeting.
