Hinson supports Trumps’s tariff announcement after Biden Administration did nothing to address trade issues

WASHINGTON — North-central Iowa Congresswoman Ashley Hinson says she’s in support of President Trump’s announcement of new tariffs on nearly all US trading partners, including elevated tariff rates on dozens of nations that run meaningful trade surpluses with the United States.

Hinson says the Biden administration’s lack of action on trade issues has hurt Iowa farmers.  “When I look at what President Biden did to wreak havoc on the farm economy, he put trade on the back burner, and Iowa ag suffered from that. His administration didn’t have respect for Iowa farmers who feed and fuel the world, and I think President Trump’s goal in what happened yesterday is free and fair trade, and he is using these tariffs as a negotiating tool to bring other countries to the table.”

Hinson says while trade is critical to the success of farmers and ranchers across the country, she wants to make sure their livelihood is not threatened in the long-term.   “I want to ensure that it’s carried out in a way that minimizes damage to our producers and provides whatever certainty we can, while also ensuring that we are no longer being taken advantage of on the global stage. So that is something that I think Iowa farmers certainly share that sentiment, and I will work every day to make sure we are getting them access to new markets and the resources that they need to be able to continue to do their jobs.”

Hinson says the tariffs will hopefully not only build a stronger American economy, but also a more solid world economy.  “Canada already kind of postured and said they’d be willing to come to the table. I think you’re going to see a lot of that. When I looked at the chart that the president presented, I think Americans can clearly see that we’ve been getting a raw deal. Many of these countries have been taking advantage of us, and I think it’s high time that we stand our ground, and I support the president in doing that.”

Trump’s executive order slaps a 10% tariff on imported goods from all countries, while an individualized reciprocal higher tariff will be placed on countries with which the administration says the US has the largest trade deficits.
