NIACC weekend roundup — baseball takes 2-of-3 from DMACC, softball splits four games, men’s golf

MASON CITY — The NIACC baseball team took two of three games in a weekend series with DMACC at Roosevelt Field. On Friday, NIACC swept a doubleheader 2-1 and 8-6. NIACC plated their two runs in the opener in the first inning with a George McIntyre two-run homer. Redshirt freshman Zack Johnson picked up the win, striking out six in five innings. NIACC trailed in Friday’s nightcap 5-4 but scored four in the seventh and held on for the 8-6 win. Lincoln Becker had a two-run home run while Henry Mattox drove in four. DMACC took the series closer on Sunday with a 6-5 victory. NIACC is 14-20 overall and 7-8 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference. The Trojans travel to Indian Hills on Tuesday. 

 

CEDAR RAPIDS — The 15th-ranked NIACC softball team took a doubleheader on Friday at Hawkeye Community College but was swept at 12th-ranked Kirkwood on Sunday. On Friday, NIACC won both games over Hawkeye by scores of 10-0, with Macy Kellar tossing a no-hitter with six strikeouts in a five-inning win in the nightcap. On Sunday, Kirkwood won the opener 10-2 in five innings and 12-6 in the nightcap. Ally Wall was 3-for-3 in the opener with a home run. In the second game, Thea Mattson was 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBI. NIACC is 22-12 overall and 7-3 in the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference. They’ll host 7th-ranked DMACC in a conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. 

 

WATERLOO — The NIACC men’s golf team finished 14th at the Upper Iowa Invitational Sunday in Waterloo. The Trojans ended with a two-round total of 656. William Jewell was the team champion with a 597, followed by Bemidji State with a 605. Sophomore Bennett Berger had NIACC’s best finish, placing 19th with a score of 155. Also for NIACC, Garrett Ham had a 163, Ashtin Willms a 167, Drew DeGabriele a 171 and Gavin Anderson a 182. NIACC returns to action Friday and Saturday at the Iowa Central Invitational in Fort Dodge.
